Research Point: Story Twists

Research Point: Story Twists

As I hope for my story to contain a large ‘twist’ at the end, I wanted to spend some time researching twists and taking advice about the best way of achieving the effect.  As mentioned earlier, The Usual Suspects is a brilliant example of a ‘twist’ that works well. However, Gramlich (2013) suggests that “When the twist ending tale works best, its climactic scene dramatically destroys what the readers or viewers think they know, and alters or even reverses the direction they thought the story was headed in.”  This has lead me to think about the ‘obvious’ ending of certain films and quickly ‘pull the rug away’ at the last minute in order to make you re-evaluate your thinking.

In order to effectively create a twist for my story, I will aim to ensure that the audience feels ‘part’ of the action and completely believes Sally’s story, and predicts the fairy tale ending of Sally ‘saving the day’.
